Autumn Conditions and Feeding

Quick growth of  pastures following summer/autumn rains can cause a variety of dietry upsets in horses.  Things to watch out for, especially in small ponies, is the development of heat in the feet and growth of a hard, and thickened crest.  These are symptoms of a condition called Founder and is very painful.  In advanced cases the pony stands with feet well forward to relieve the pain and is very reluctant to move.  Call the Vet immediately if you observe these symptoms.  Founder is caused by the high sugar content in growing grasses and not enough execise.  If the pony is showing initial signs of founder, lock up in a "Jenny Craig" paddock, feed only the plainest of grass hay or chaff and a supply of clean water, and try to exercise either by lunging or riding.

Winter Rugs

Now is the time to dust off all those winter rugs and check to see that they are in A1 condition for the coming season.  Some things to check :

1.    Is the rug still waterproof?

2.    Are that the leg strap attachments are firmly anchored, check for wear and see that snaps are in working order.  A little spray of oil can free them if they are sticking, otherwise replace with new.

3.    A stitch in time  saves nine!  A quick repair of a small hole now is better than finding half your rug in the mud.
